Religion from machines: an engineer’s AI god vision

The Guardian has an interesting profile today of a project from the (in)famous engineer Anthony Levandowski, who is at the center of the Google/Waymo vs. Uber battle over intellectual property. The profile,
Deus ex machina: former Google engineer is developing an AI god, documents Levandowski’s nonprofit religious corporation Way of the Future.

The mission of the Way of the Future:

“To develop and promote the realization of a Godhead based on artificial intelligence and through understanding and worship of the Godhead contribute to the betterment of society.”

What is going on here? Not exactly clear. The Guardian goes to discussions of alienation of engineers and technologists from traditional religion. Will we transfer our knowledge and values to machines? Will AI be imbued with certain religions’ values? Will we have an AI-based ‘godhead’?
